Adding an Outdoor Living Space Could Make Your Home Sell Faster

Thinking of putting your home on the market soon? To make your home stand out and sell quicker, you might want to consider adding an attractive outdoor living space. According to the American Society of Landscape Architects’ CEO, Nancy Somerville, “Home owners know that designed landscapes add value to their lives as well as their property values.” More importantly for those looking to sell their homes, a National Association of Realtors survey shows more than half of surveyed buyers would pay a premium for a home with an outdoor living space.

Let's go outside

Here are a few tips to keep in mind about enhancing your outdoor living space:

Don’t Overdo It
If you are looking to enjoy your outdoor living space but know you’ll be selling your home in a year or two, don’t overdo it with fancy features like stereo surround sound, outdoor TVs, or cascading waterfalls. Stick to the basics with functional items that people will appreciate and use like adding a patio or deck, a fire pit, and a cozy seating area. Don’t feel like you have to have everything built in for your outdoor space. You can purchase affordable gazebo coverings, seating area furniture, rugs, lighting, and even a fire pit at home decorating stores to create a cozy space on your patio or deck.

Keep it Low Maintenance
According to a recent ASLA survey with 180 landscape architects about what people are demanding in outdoor living spaces, they found that “They want attractive outdoor spaces that are both easy to take care of and sustainable.” A lot of people don’t want features that add extra work like a pool, spa or waterfall that needs monthly maintenance. They also want trees and plants that are native to the area, hardy, and are easy to care for.

Give Them What They Want
According to the ASLA survey, the top outdoor living features people want are:

1. Lighting
2. Seating/dining areas
3. Fire pits/fireplaces
4. Grills

Get Professional Help
Consider hiring a Landscape Architect or an Interior Designer who specializes in Outdoor Living Spaces to help you come up with options that add a lot of value, but meet your budget. They know the ins and outs of how to create attractive and functional spaces. They know what products and alternatives are available on the market to meet your requirements. Their experience can help keep you from overspending, creating too large of an area, or missing an opportunity to add value.

Once the weather gets warmer, consider adding to the value of your home with an attractive outdoor living space.

Would you consider investing in an Outdoor Living Area to add to the value of your home and help sell it faster? Why or why not?
