This is the first part of our new series covering Chicago neighborhoods you should get to know. We’ll let you in on interesting history and cool hotspots as well as practical information, like transportation and schools, in each area. Strap on your walking shoes and let’s take a tour of some of Chicago’s great communities.

Uptown

Uptown is a diverse community near the lakefront. It boasts a number of music venues and restaurants for an evening out as well as quieter places to take in the sights of Lake Michigan and the downtown skyline. Here are some other notable aspects of this unique part of Chicago.

Roaring in Uptown

Back in the 1920s, Uptown was a swinging spot for the likes of Chicago’s hip crowd and well-known criminals, like Al Capone. Silent film studios, theaters, restaurants, and jazz joints were jumping along Uptown’s streets. And some of the city’s most famous, such as Marshall Field and Louis Sullivan, are buried in Uptown’s Graceland Cemetery (bordered by Montrose and Irving Park) where you can take in the ornate architecture of a by-gone era.

Music Mania

Are you a music lover? Uptown boasts three of Chicago’s well-known music venues including the Riviera, the Aragon Ballroom, and the Green Mill. And if you like music outdoors (and ribs), Uptown is also the location of the annual summer festival Windy City Ribfest.

Lakefront Fun

Montrose Beach and Foster Beach are two great places to spend a day in the water. (You can even bring your dog to part of Montrose Beach designated for pooches.) Birdwatchers also find Uptown’s shoreline appealing, as there are some 300 species of birds that visit Magic Hedge at Montrose Point.

Neat Eats

Uptown has a diverse offering of foods to meet anyone’s tastes. Head to the Argyle Street corridor for Vietnamese, Chinese, or Thai food restaurants—like Pho Xe Tang, Sun Wah Bar-B-Q, or Hai-Yen. More foodie delights can be found along Wilson Avenue at Fontana Grill and Wine Bar and the new but already hot bakery Baker and Nosh.

Cool Shops

Used books and records are in abundance at the Uptown mainstay Shake Rattle & Read. You will also find the oldest tattoo shop in the city—the Tattoo Factory—to fulfill any ink needs.

El Stops Here

You’ll have no problem getting where you want to go with the Four Red Line stops located in Uptown. The stops include Sheridan, Wilson, Lawrence, and Argyle.

Walk It

If you’re looking for a walkable neighborhood (places you can get to using your own two feet), Uptown is a sure fit. It scores a 94, which ties with several other neighborhoods in the city including Lincoln Square, the Gold Coast, and River North, and places eleventh out of all the city’s neighborhoods.

School 411

Sending students to school? Uptown has both Chicago Public schools, like the Walt Disney Magnet School and Goudy Elementary School, and private schools, including St. Mary of the Lake School and Lycee Francais De Chicago.

That is just a tiny peek at Uptown. Be sure to ask your Century 21 Agent for more in-depth information and a tour around the community. Next stop, the West Loop…

Let us know if there is a Chicago neighborhood you want to know more about.
